LEH: The Animal Husbandry Department, Leh, sterilised and vaccinated 159 stray dogs during a three-day Animal Birth Control and Anti-Rabies (ABC&AR) camp at Nurla, as part of its continuing efforts to manage the stray dog population and curb the spread of rabies.
The camp, organised by the department’s Animal Birth Control and Anti-Rabies Team from July 27 to 29, focused on implementing scientific measures to improve animal welfare while addressing public health concerns associated with stray dogs.
According to the department, veterinarians, paraveterinary personnel and trained animal handlers jointly carried out sterilisation procedures and administered anti-rabies vaccines to all 159 stray dogs covered under the programme.
The initiative was undertaken with the objective of controlling the growth of the stray dog population through humane birth control measures while reducing the risk of rabies through preventive vaccination.
Officials said such interventions form part of the department’s sustained strategy to strengthen rabies prevention and promote responsible stray animal management across Leh district. Regular sterilisation and vaccination campaigns are being undertaken in different areas to minimise human-animal conflict and improve public safety.
The department said coordinated field operations involving veterinary professionals and support staff remain central to its efforts to maintain animal health while contributing to safer communities through preventive disease control.
