Lok Sabha data reveals expanding computer, internet and smart classroom infrastructure across remote schools under Centre-backed digital education initiatives
LEH: Ladakh’s school education system is steadily embracing digital transformation, with 478 schools now equipped with computer facilities, 395 schools connected to the internet, and 356 schools featuring smart classrooms, according to official data presented in the Lok Sabha by the Union Minister of State for Education.
The figures, based on the latest Unified District Information System for Education Plus (UDISE+), provide a snapshot of the Union Territory’s growing digital education infrastructure across its 883 operational schools, highlighting significant progress in extending technology-enabled learning to some of India’s most remote and high-altitude regions.
The data shows that digital education initiatives have reached deep into rural Ladakh, with 450 of the 478 schools having computer facilities located in rural areas, while 373 of the 395 internet-enabled schools and 336 of the 356 smart classrooms are also situated in villages. The trend underscores the government’s focus on narrowing the urban-rural digital divide and improving educational opportunities for students living in remote mountain communities.
Officials said the expansion of smart classrooms, computer laboratories and internet connectivity is transforming the learning experience by enabling access to digital content, interactive teaching methods and online educational resources. The facilities also help teachers access updated study materials, manage academic records digitally and improve classroom delivery despite the logistical challenges posed by Ladakh’s rugged terrain and harsh winters.
The Union Government attributed the progress to sustained support under flagship initiatives such as Samagra Shiksha, which provides financial assistance to states and Union Territories based on approved annual work plans, along with PM e-Vidya and the BharatNet programme that aims to strengthen broadband connectivity in rural educational institutions.
While the data reflects notable gains, it also points to the need for further expansion. Of the 883 operational schools in Ladakh, 527 are yet to be equipped with smart classrooms, while 488 schools still await functional internet connectivity, indicating that digital infrastructure development remains an ongoing priority.
With continued investments under centrally sponsored schemes, Ladakh is expected to witness further improvements in digital education infrastructure, ensuring that students across its remote mountain villages gain greater access to technology-driven learning and quality education.
