KARGIL: Additional District Development Commissioner (ADDC), Ghulam Mohd, JKAS, on Wednesday directed departments to strengthen coordination and ensure the time-bound implementation of measures to address the growing stray dog and stray animal menace in Kargil, with a focus on sterilisation, waste management and public awareness.
Chairing a review meeting, the ADDC assessed the status of compliance with decisions taken during previous meetings and reviewed the progress made by the concerned departments in implementing the district’s action plan.
Emphasising that the issue requires a sustained and coordinated response, Ghulam Mohd instructed all stakeholder departments to work in close coordination and ensure that prescribed measures are implemented without delay.
During the meeting, the Chief Animal Husbandry Officer briefed the administration on the ongoing stray dog management and sterilisation programme, while representatives of the Municipal Committee, Kargil, outlined sanitation and scientific waste management initiatives aimed at reducing access to food sources that attract stray animals.
The Chief Medical Officer informed the meeting that anti-rabies vaccines and treatment facilities were available across the district and highlighted the need to intensify public awareness on the prevention and management of dog-bite cases.
The Chief Education Officer was directed to organise awareness programmes in schools to educate students about safety precautions and responsible behaviour around stray animals.
The ADDC underscored the importance of scientific waste management, sustained public awareness campaigns and effective inter-departmental coordination in addressing the issue. He instructed all concerned departments to submit regular progress reports and ensure the action plan is implemented within stipulated timelines to safeguard public health and public safety.
The meeting concluded with participating departments reaffirming their commitment to strengthening coordination and taking proactive measures to mitigate the stray dog and stray animal menace across Kargil district.
