Adventure Tourism can grow through responsible motorcycle travel: Kundra

CS opens Royal Enfield Himalayan Basecamp in Leh

LEH: Ladakh can further expand its adventure tourism economy by promoting responsible motorcycle travel and experiential tourism, Chief Secretary Ashish Kundra said on Friday while inaugurating the Royal Enfield Himalayan Basecamp at Chuchot Ground, Leh.

Kundra said Ladakh had already emerged as a major destination for motorcycle enthusiasts, drawn by its high-altitude terrain, mountain roads and distinctive natural and cultural experiences. He said initiatives such as the Himalayan Basecamp could complement the UT’s tourism promotion efforts while creating a dedicated space for the motorcycle community.

The Basecamp was inaugurated in the presence of former Member of Parliament Jamyang Tsering Namgyal, Secretary, Transport, Arava Gopi Krishna, and Secretary, Tourism, Sanjeet Rodrigues.

Organised by Ladakh Bike Rental Cooperative Limited in association with Royal Enfield, a unit of Eicher Motors Limited, the event brought automotive and lifestyle media representatives from across the country to showcase Ladakh’s adventure tourism potential.

Kundra said the Basecamp could grow into a larger platform with participation from across India and overseas. He also welcomed Royal Enfield’s association with the initiative, saying such platforms could help connect visitors with Ladakh’s landscapes, culture and tourism experiences.

During his visit, the Chief Secretary inspected stalls displaying pashmina, jackets, handicrafts, paintings, wall art and tapestries, alongside motorcycles, riding gear and helmets carrying road-safety messages.

The venue also featured new motorcycle models, café and camping facilities, navigation activities and other adventure-tourism experiences.

The initiative brought motorcycle tourism, local products and cultural showcases together, offering participating businesses and artists an opportunity to engage with visitors and media representatives.

The event also highlighted the growing role of adventure and motorcycle tourism in Ladakh’s wider tourism economy, while placing responsible travel and local cultural experiences within the tourism narrative.

Representatives of Royal Enfield and other concerned officials were present at the event.
