LEH: Based on the weather forecast issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD), UT Ladakh, predicting light to heavy rainfall across parts of the Union Territory from 20th to 23rd July, the Agromet Field Unit (AMFU), School of Agricultural Sciences and Technology (SAS&T), Leh, University of Ladakh, has issued the weather-based advisory for farmers.
The AFMU has advised the farmers in the lower Sham area of Leh district, Turtuk and Bogdang villages of Nubra district, and the lower altitude areas of Kargil district to postpone the harvesting of barley and alfalfa until weather conditions improve.
Farmers who have already harvested their barley and alfalfa are advised to keep polythene sheets ready to cover the harvested produce during rainfall or to store it in a sheltered or covered area to prevent moisture damage and safeguard crop quality.
Additionally, farmers across Leh, Sham, Nubra, Changthang, Kargil, Zanskar, and Drass are advised to clean drainage channels to facilitate the proper disposal of excess rainwater and reduce the risk of waterlogging. They are also advised to avoid intercultural operations in vegetable and field crops during the forecast period, as wet field conditions may adversely affect crop health and farm operations.
The Agromet Field Unit urged all farmers to remain updated with the latest weather forecasts and follow the recommended advisories to minimize potential crop losses and ensure the safety of agricultural operations.
