AI-Generated Image Row: Written apology submitted to CEC Kargil

Public warned against misuse of Digital content

KARGIL: A controversy surrounding the circulation of an AI-generated image depicting Chairman and Chief Executive Councillor, LAHDC Kargil, Dr. Mohd Jaffer Akhoon, took a fresh turn on Saturday after Mohammad Ibrahim submitted a formal written apology, admitting responsibility for the image and expressing regret over its circulation and the misconceptions it created.

In the letter addressed to the CEC, Ibrahim stated that the image, which portrayed Dr. Akhoon wearing a saffron stole carrying a political symbol, had been generated inadvertently while experimenting with artificial intelligence tools. He maintained that it was never intended to defame the CEC, misrepresent his political position or compromise the dignity of his office.

Describing the circulation of the image as an unintended lapse, Ibrahim accepted responsibility for allowing the digitally altered content to enter the public domain and acknowledged that it had led to unwarranted ambiguity regarding the CEC’s political neutrality. He apologised for the incident, sought forgiveness and assured that he would exercise greater caution, responsibility and restraint in all future digital engagements.

The development has prompted a broader public advisory against the misuse of artificial intelligence technologies. Authorities urged people to refrain from creating, altering or circulating fabricated images through AI tools, cautioning that such acts are not only ethically unacceptable but may also attract legal consequences under the law.

The advisory further appealed to social media users to verify digital content before sharing it and to exercise responsibility while using AI-enabled platforms. It stressed that manipulated images and misleading digital content have the potential to damage reputations, distort public perception and erode trust in public institutions.

The episode has once again highlighted the growing challenge posed by AI-generated content and underscored the need for greater digital responsibility as rapidly evolving technologies become increasingly accessible to the public.
