ZANSKAR: A three-day transport camp organised by the Assistant Regional Transport Office (ARTO), Kargil, concluded in Zanskar on Wednesday, bringing vehicle registration, fitness inspections, driving tests and other transport-related services closer to residents of the remote region.
The camp, which began on October 12, aimed to facilitate public access to transport services and address local requirements without the need for residents to travel outside the area for routine procedures.
During the three-day exercise, the Motor Vehicle Department conducted vehicle fitness inspections, new vehicle registrations, road checking and transport driving tests. Transport unions also raised concerns relating to local transport services and operational issues, which were heard for consideration and follow-up.
As part of the initiative, the Zanskar Taxi Union organised a road safety awareness programme at the Tourist Dak Bungalow, focusing on the dangers of driving under the influence of alcohol.
The programme brought together senior citizens, the President of the Ladakh Buddhist Association (LBA), representatives of Anjuman, the Station House Officer (SHO) of Zanskar, the President of the Zanskar Trade Association, the President of Amatsoqspa, drivers and students. Dr Amjad, Principal of Degree College Zanskar, attended the event.
The awareness session highlighted the risks associated with drinking and driving and stressed the need for responsible behaviour behind the wheel, compliance with traffic regulations and collective efforts to prevent road accidents.
The organisers also underlined the importance of road safety for residents and tourists, particularly in a region where safe transport is essential for public mobility and visitor welfare.
The camp concluded with the Motor Vehicle Department reiterating its commitment to improving access to transport services, strengthening transport regulation and promoting road safety awareness in remote areas of the district.
