Buddhist Meditation Retreat emphasises mental health and emotional resilience

DHARAMSHALA: Emphasising the growing relevance of mindfulness and contemplative practices in addressing mental health challenges, the Department of Buddhist Studies, University of Jammu, in collaboration with the University of Life, concluded a ten-day residential summer meditation retreat titled “Journey to Inner Peace” at McLeod Ganj in Dharamshala on Sunday.

The retreat, held in the Himalayan town that serves as the residence of His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama, brought together participants from different parts of the country seeking mental well-being, emotional resilience and spiritual growth through Buddhist contemplative traditions.

Organisers said the programme was designed to help participants manage stress, cultivate mindfulness and strengthen their inner balance through authentic Buddhist meditation practices. The retreat combined meditation, philosophical teachings and reflective exercises aimed at promoting holistic well-being in an increasingly demanding and fast-paced social environment.

Over the course of ten days, participants took part in guided Vipassana and mindfulness meditation sessions, walking meditation exercises in the pine-covered landscapes of Dharamshala, teachings on Buddhist philosophy and ethics, periods of Noble Silence for self-reflection, and interactive discussions with meditation experts and Buddhist scholars.

Addressing the valedictory session, organisers highlighted the importance of mindfulness-based approaches in enhancing emotional stability and mental wellness. They observed that such programmes provide individuals with an opportunity to step away from routine pressures and reconnect with themselves in a calm and spiritually nurturing setting.

Participants described the retreat as a transformative experience and expressed appreciation for the guidance provided by experienced meditation teachers and scholars throughout the programme.

The Department of Buddhist Studies and the University of Life reiterated their commitment to advancing contemplative education and promoting inner well-being through similar initiatives in the future.

The concluding session was attended by Dr. Maruti Sharma and Retreat Coordinator Mrs. Shilpa Gupta from the University of Life, along with Dr. Rajesh Sharma and Dr. Vivek Sharma from the Department of Buddhist Studies, University of Jammu.

A total of twelve participants from various regions of India successfully completed the residential programme and shared their experiences during the closing ceremony.
