KARGIL: Chairman and Chief Executive Councillor (CEC), LAHDC Kargil, Dr Mohd Jaffer Akhoon, on Thursday flagged off a mega padyatra in Kargil under the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan, urging collective action against substance abuse while linking the campaign with environmental awareness and healthier lifestyles.
Held as part of the UT-wide Drug Awareness Campaign under the theme “Walk for a Drug-Free and Greener Ladakh,” the padyatra began at the Old Taxi Stand, Kargil.
Participants marched towards Fatima Chowk, raising awareness against drug abuse and calling for greater public participation in efforts to build a drug-free society.
The march concluded at Fatima Chowk, where participants took a pledge to stay away from drugs and contribute towards creating a healthy and responsible society.
A signature campaign was also organised at the conclusion of the padyatra, drawing participation from students, government officials and members of the public.
The event brought together senior representatives of the administration, police and health departments, along with a large number of students.
Member of Parliament Ladakh Haneefa Jan, Deputy Commissioner Kargil Rakesh Kumar, SSP Kargil Nitin Yadav, ADDC Ghulam Mohd, ADC Kargil Shabbir Hussain, CMO Kargil and DSWO Kargil, besides the Chief Planning Officer and officers and officials from various departments, participated in the march.
The organisers said the initiative sought to strengthen public awareness about substance abuse while encouraging healthy lifestyles and active youth participation in prevention efforts.
The environmental component of the campaign also sought to connect the message of a drug-free society with greater awareness of the need to protect the local environment.
