CEC Kargil orders immediate action after Brown Bear enters Brako School premises

KARGIL: Assuring immediate measures to safeguard residents following repeated brown bear attacks in Brako village, Chairman and Chief Executive Councillor (CEC), LAHDC Kargil, Dr. Mohd Jaffer Akhoon, on Monday directed the Wildlife Department to initiate prompt intervention to prevent further wildlife incursions and strengthen public safety in the area.

Dr. Akhoon visited Brako village in Sankoo Sub-Division after reports of recurring brown bear sightings and attacks triggered concern among residents. During the visit, villagers informed the CEC that a brown bear had entered the premises of Government Middle School, Brako, during the night, heightening fears over the safety of students and school staff.

Residents also told the CEC that the animal had repeatedly attacked livestock in the village, resulting in losses and creating an atmosphere of fear that has disrupted daily life. They said many villagers were reluctant to venture into agricultural fields due to the continuing threat posed by the wild animal.

Taking note of the concerns, the CEC directed Wildlife Department officials to implement immediate and effective measures to prevent further attacks, protect human life and property, and extend assistance to affected residents in accordance with the prescribed norms.

During the interaction, the villagers submitted a memorandum seeking urgent intervention to safeguard lives, livestock and agricultural activities. Officials of Government Middle School, Brako, separately submitted a memorandum requesting infrastructure improvements to enhance the safety and welfare of students in view of the recent wildlife incidents.

Dr. Akhoon gave a patient hearing to the representations and assured that the genuine demands raised by both the villagers and the school authorities would be taken up on priority. He said the LAHDC Kargil would coordinate with the concerned departments to strengthen public safety measures, improve essential infrastructure and ensure timely support for the affected community.
