CTA pays tribute to Scholar and Tibet Advocate Robert Thurman

DHARAMSHALA: Sikyong Penpa Tsering has expressed deep condolences on the passing of renowned American Buddhist scholar Professor Robert A.F. Thurman, paying tribute to his lifelong contribution to Tibetan Buddhist studies, cultural preservation and advocacy for the Tibetan people.

In a condolence message issued on behalf of the Central Tibetan Administration (CTA) and the Tibetan people, the Sikyong conveyed sympathies to Nena Thurman and the Thurman family, describing Professor Thurman as one of the most influential figures in introducing Tibetan Buddhism to Western audiences.

Professor Robert A.F. Thurman served as Professor of Indo-Tibetan Buddhist Studies at Columbia University and was instrumental in establishing Tibet House US and Menla Retreat in New York. Widely respected for advancing Tibetan Buddhist scholarship in international academic circles, he was awarded the Padma Shri by the Government of India in 2020 in recognition of his contributions to literature and education.

In his message, Penpa Tsering noted that Professor Thurman was among the earliest Western scholars to champion Tibetan Buddhist philosophy and culture on the global stage. He described him as a devoted disciple and close friend of His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama for more than six decades, who dedicated his life to sharing the principles of compassion, wisdom and non-violence rooted in Tibetan Buddhism.

The Sikyong also highlighted Professor Thurman’s unwavering support for Tibet and its people. Through his books, academic work, public lectures, media engagements and testimony before the United States Congress, he played an important role in raising international awareness about Tibet and fostering global support for the Tibetan cause.

“The Tibetan people will remember Professor Thurman with deep gratitude for his lifelong friendship, dedication and service,” the condolence message stated, noting that his efforts helped strengthen international understanding of Tibet’s cultural and spiritual heritage.

Describing his passing as a profound loss to the academic community, Buddhist practitioners and supporters of Tibet worldwide, Penpa Tsering said Professor Thurman’s extraordinary legacy would continue to inspire future generations and remain a source of encouragement for the Tibetan people.

The message concluded with prayers and condolences to the bereaved family, remembering Professor Robert A.F. Thurman as an exceptional scholar, educator and humanitarian whose life was devoted to learning, compassion and service to humanity.
