KARGIL: Deputy Commissioner Kargil Rakesh Kumar has called for a coordinated campaign involving the administration, police, religious organisations, schools and civil society to curb drug abuse and strengthen prevention and rehabilitation efforts across the district.
Chairing a meeting on the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan at his office on Thursday, Kumar directed the Police Department to intensify action against both the demand and supply of drugs and take strict legal action against those involved in drug-related activities.
He also called for identification and seizure of properties acquired through proceeds of drug-related activities wherever permitted under law.
Representatives of religious organisations suggested expanding counselling, vocational training and sports-based activities for people recovering from substance abuse to support their rehabilitation and reintegration into society.
Kumar urged religious organisations to make a common appeal against drug abuse through Friday sermons, particularly focusing on young people and families.
He also proposed preparing a network of religious scholars from villages who could be trained in the scientific aspects, warning signs and symptoms of drug abuse. The trained scholars could subsequently serve as trainers at village and sub-divisional levels.
The meeting also discussed video awareness campaigns, mass rallies, lectures and intensified programmes in schools and educational institutions.
The Deputy Commissioner said combating substance abuse required sustained coordination between enforcement agencies and community institutions.
He stressed that a broad-based prevention and awareness network was necessary to protect young people and strengthen efforts towards a drug-free Kargil.
