LEH: Director General of Police (DGP) Ladakh, Anand Jain interacted with 21 IPS probationer officers currently on a Study-cum-Cultural Tour of the Union Territory, encouraging them to gain first-hand insights into the distinctive operational, logistical and strategic dimensions of policing in one of India’s most challenging terrains.
The visiting contingent was led by Ms. Radhika G., IPS, Deputy Director of the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Police Academy, Hyderabad.
Welcoming the young officers, DGP Anand Jain provided a comprehensive overview of the organisational structure, functioning and operational responsibilities of the Ladakh Police. He highlighted the unique demands of policing in a high-altitude region characterised by extreme weather conditions, difficult terrain and strategic international borders, while emphasizing the importance of adapting policing strategies to local geographical and socio-cultural realities.
The DGP urged the probationers to closely observe the innovative policing practices adopted by the Ladakh Police to effectively discharge their duties in harsh climatic conditions. He stressed that the experience would offer valuable lessons in leadership, resilience and resource management, equipping the officers for diverse policing assignments in the future.
During the programme, the Assistant Inspector General (Personnel), Police Headquarters, Ladakh, delivered a detailed presentation outlining the organisational framework of the Ladakh Police and the geopolitical significance of the Union Territory. The session also highlighted various initiatives undertaken by the force to improve operational efficiency and personnel welfare in extreme weather conditions.
The interaction featured detailed discussions on several pioneering measures adopted by the Ladakh Police, including the development of winter-friendly police infrastructure, the use of solar energy to support police establishments, and greenhouse cultivation of vegetables to ensure year-round availability of fresh produce for police personnel stationed in remote locations. Officers were also briefed on the operational and logistical challenges associated with policing in high-altitude, cold-desert conditions, where accessibility, mobility and resource management require innovative solutions.
An interactive session enabled the probationer officers to engage with senior police officers and gain a deeper understanding of the practical aspects of policing in Ladakh, including border security coordination, infrastructure development and maintaining law and order in geographically isolated areas.
Concluding the interaction, DGP Anand Jain advised the probationer officers to make the most of their educational visit by learning from Ladakh’s distinctive policing environment while also experiencing the Union Territory’s breathtaking landscapes, unique topography and rich cultural heritage.
The study tour is aimed at exposing future police leaders to diverse policing environments across the country, enabling them to better appreciate the challenges, innovations and best practices associated with policing in strategically important and geographically demanding regions like Ladakh.
