Director Sheep Husbandry reviews Pashmina expansion and Fodder devp during Drass visit

DRASS: Director Sheep Husbandry Department, UT Ladakh, Dr. Iftikhar Hussain reviewed plans to expand pashmina rearing, fodder development and livestock infrastructure in Drass, including the proposed development of a dedicated Pashmina Farm and additional fodder resources for local breeders.

During his visit to Drass, Dr. Hussain inspected the proposed Fodder Development Land at Thasgam, identified by the local community for departmental use. He assessed the site’s potential for fodder development and discussed its possible utilisation to strengthen the fodder base in the area.

The Director also interacted with members of the Pashmina Growers Cooperative Society, Bhimbat, Drass, where he stressed the need to strengthen and expand pashmina rearing in the district. He said the sector has the potential to improve the livelihoods of local livestock farmers and contribute to the local economy.

He apprised pashmina growers of various initiatives being undertaken by the UT Administration of Ladakh for promotion and development of the pashmina sector and encouraged them to participate in departmental programmes and adopt improved practices to enhance production and productivity.

During the interaction, Dr. Hussain distributed pashmina combs among local breeders, providing them with tools for improved management of pashmina goats and collection of quality fibre.

He later inspected the Fodder Development Farm at Bearas to assess its present status and examine possibilities for developing it further as a dedicated Pashmina Farm, Drass. The Director also reviewed prospects for increasing fodder production at the farm, stressing the need for adequate fodder resources to sustain livestock and pashmina production in the high-altitude region.

Dr. Hussain subsequently met Deputy Commissioner Drass Dr. Imteeaz Kacho to discuss issues concerning the development and strengthening of the sheep husbandry sector in the district. The Deputy Commissioner assured full cooperation and support from the district administration for expanding departmental activities in Drass.

District Sheep Husbandry Officer Drass, Dr. Zakir Hussain, accompanied the Director during the meeting.

The Director also inspected the construction site of the Livestock Shed and Staff Quarters at Mina Marg Highland Pastures, reviewing the progress of the project and its associated requirements.

The visit provided the department an opportunity to assess on the ground the development potential of sheep husbandry, particularly pashmina rearing, while examining measures to improve livestock infrastructure, fodder availability and pashmina production for local breeders and farmers.
