GDC Drass Students gain practical exposure to PowerSector, entrepreneurship and self-employment

DRASS: Students of Government Degree College (GDC) Drass were introduced to entrepreneurship, self-employment and local business opportunities during an “Exchange of Ideas” programme organised at the 220/66 kV POWERGRID Drass Substation.

The academic outreach programme gave students practical exposure to the power-transmission sector and information on opportunities available to local vendors in areas such as civil works, maintenance, transportation, manpower and other support services.

Shawkat, Functional Manager, Industries and Commerce, Kargil, briefed the students on government initiatives aimed at encouraging local entrepreneurship and self-employment.

Deputy Commissioner Drass, Imteeaz Kacho, JKAS, urged local youth and businesses to participate more actively in regional development and make use of available opportunities.

Representatives of POWERGRID explained the PRANIT e-tendering platform and outlined the process through which local vendors can participate in procurement and service opportunities.

Participants were also informed about a proposed Vendor Development Meet scheduled for the end of September 2026. The event is expected to provide guidance from POWERGRID’s Regional Headquarters team on vendor registration and e-tendering procedures.

The interaction was aimed at bridging classroom learning with practical exposure and encouraging students to consider entrepreneurship, skill development and self-employment alongside conventional career paths.

Earlier, GDC Drass also marked Teachers’ Day, with Principal Nasir ul Mehdi Shabani appreciating the contribution of teachers in shaping students’ futures.

Shabani encouraged students to pursue learning and career opportunities beyond the classroom and make effective use of avenues for professional and personal development.

The college expressed appreciation to POWERGRID, government officials and other stakeholders for facilitating the interaction and providing students with practical insight into the power-transmission sector and local economic opportunities.
