Young monks showcase Buddhist philosophical traditions as Ladakh’s spiritual and intellectual heritage takes centre stage
LEH: His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama on Sunday visited Matho in Leh district and attended the concluding session of Yarchos Chenmo (Great Summer Debate), turning the final day of the major Buddhist philosophical gathering into a significant spiritual and academic occasion for Ladakh.
His Holiness arrived at the Ngonpar Gaway Phodrang Teaching Ground, where the final session of the Ladakh Mangtro Yarchos Chenmo was being held. The visit drew monks, scholars, students, devotees and members of the local community, with people lining the route to welcome the Tibetan spiritual leader. T
The visit was centred on the final session of the Great Summer Debate, an important platform for the study, examination and preservation of Buddhist philosophical traditions. The gathering at Matho brought together monks and young students who demonstrated their skills in philosophical debate before His Holiness.
After reaching the teaching ground, His Holiness took his place on the stage and watched young students and monks participate in philosophical debates. Official photographs from the event show students presenting their arguments before him, while monks engaged in traditional philosophical debate in his presence.
The event reflected the distinctive tradition of Tibetan Buddhist education in which philosophical understanding is developed through rigorous debate, questioning and reasoning rather than through passive learning.
His Holiness addressed the congregation during the concluding session, with the proceedings also featuring prayers and traditional offerings. Khöndung Asanga Vajra Sakya Rinpoche presented traditional offerings to His Holiness, while Ven Thinles Chossal, Abbot of Matho Monastery, offered him a statue.
The programme was also attended by prominent religious and community figures, including Thiksey Rinpoche and Ngawang Jogme Lodoe Rinpoche. They participated in prayers during the concluding proceedings. Jamyang Tsering Namgyal, Member Secretary of the Organising Committee and former Member of Parliament, also addressed the gathering.
The Matho gathering assumes importance beyond the religious dimension as it underlines Ladakh’s continuing role as a centre of Buddhist philosophical study and monastic education.
The Yarchos Chenmo, or Great Summer Debate, provides an opportunity for monks and students to engage in rigorous philosophical examination and to carry forward a centuries-old intellectual tradition. The event also serves to connect monastic learning with the younger generation and encourage the continued study of classical Buddhist texts.
His Holiness has repeatedly stressed the importance of studying Buddhist philosophy rather than limiting religious practice to rituals. During his earlier participation in Great Summer Debate programmes in Ladakh, he highlighted the value of systematic study and philosophical inquiry, while the events have also provided opportunities for students and participants from different communities to discuss issues of contemporary relevance.
The Matho event consequently offered a contemporary expression of this tradition, with young students themselves taking part in philosophical debate before His Holiness.
The final session was held at the Matho Phodrang Teaching Ground, with the historic Matho Monastery overlooking the venue. The official images show a large congregation gathered for the concluding programme, with monks participating in debates and prayers and His Holiness addressing the gathering.
At the conclusion of the session, His Holiness left for lunch at Ngonpar Gaway Phodrang, where he later exchanged greetings with Thiksey Rinpoche. He also waved to people from the balcony of the Phodrang while proceeding for lunch.
The visit marked another significant engagement by His Holiness during his extended stay in Ladakh. He arrived in Leh in June and has since participated in a series of religious, cultural and public engagements across the region, including prayers, teachings and community events. His official website records his recent visits to Gonpa Village, the Mahabodhi International Meditation Center and other locations in Ladakh.
