LEH: The ICAR-Central Arid Zone Research Institute (CAZRI), Regional Research Station, Stakna, organised a farmer awareness programme under the Khet Bachao Abhiyan at Hemis village in Kharu Block on Friday, focusing on balanced fertiliser use, soil nutrient management and sustainable agricultural practices in Ladakh.
The programme brought together local farmers and agricultural experts to discuss strategies for improving soil health, enhancing crop productivity and promoting efficient use of agricultural resources in the cold arid region.
Introducing the campaign, Rigzin Dorje outlined the objectives of the Khet Bachao Abhiyan and underscored the need to conserve agricultural land through sustainable farming practices. Dr A.R. Chichaghare, Scientist at ICAR-CAZRI, briefed participants on the institute’s research and extension activities and its contribution to agricultural development in Ladakh.
Addressing the technical session, Mohd. Raza highlighted the importance of soil testing, balanced fertiliser application and integrated nutrient management for maintaining soil fertility and ensuring sustainable crop production.
Jigmat Stanzin conducted a training session on apple and potato crop management and discussed the growing challenges posed by climate change. He advised farmers to adopt climate-resilient agricultural practices to reduce production risks and improve yields.
In another session, Dr Prabakaran, Scientist, spoke on value addition of wild rose and explained processing techniques and market opportunities for developing value-added products. He said such interventions could supplement farm incomes and encourage local entrepreneurship.
The programme witnessed active participation from farmers, who interacted with experts and sought solutions to issues related to crop management and soil health.
The event concluded with a vote of thanks and a commitment by the organisers to continue outreach and extension programmes aimed at strengthening sustainable agriculture and improving livelihoods in Ladakh’s farming communities.
