LEH: The Indian Army on Thursday concluded the Silk Route Expedition 2026, completing a 307-kilometre traverse from Nimu to the Karakoram Pass over 12 days across Ladakh’s high-altitude terrain, in an exercise that combined physical endurance with the commemoration of one of the region’s most historic trade corridors.
The expedition concluded with a flagging-in ceremony after participants negotiated a series of mountain passes ranging from approximately 11,000 to more than 16,000 feet above sea level, traversing some of the most demanding terrain in the Himalayan region.
According to the Army, the expedition retraced sections of the ancient Silk Route, highlighting the historical importance of the trans-Himalayan trade network while reaffirming the region’s civilisational legacy.
The exercise also served as a demonstration of the endurance, resilience and operational preparedness of Indian Army personnel operating in extreme high-altitude conditions, where challenging terrain, low oxygen levels and harsh weather present persistent operational demands.
The Army said the expedition was intended to honour the historical legacy of the Silk Route while reinforcing its enduring association with the people of Ladakh through continued engagement with the region’s cultural and geographical heritage.
Officials noted that the successful completion of the expedition reflected the Army’s emphasis on physical preparedness and its ability to undertake sustained operations in some of the world’s most challenging mountain environments.
