Kargil Police, FSL facilitate practical training for University of Ladakh Forensic Science Students

KARGIL: Students of the Department of Forensic Science, Kargil Campus, University of Ladakh, received practical exposure to policing, crime investigation and forensic procedures during an academic visit to Police Station Baroo, Kargil, where they were introduced to field-level processes involved in crime scene management and handling of physical and digital evidence.

The visit, organised as part of the students’ academic curriculum, brought classroom learning closer to actual policing practices. It was facilitated under the guidance of Dr Mehboob Ali, In-charge, Administration, Kargil Campus, and Dr Qutsia Tabasum, Coordinator, Department of Forensic Science, Kargil Campus.

During the visit, the students attended sessions on the functioning, organisational structure and jurisdiction of the police station, besides receiving demonstrations on crime scene management and initial response procedures.

The students were also briefed on investigation procedures, including case registration and documentation, as well as the preservation, handling and packaging of physical evidence. The sessions provided an insight into the procedures through which material collected during an investigation is preserved for subsequent forensic examination.

A separate component of the visit focused on the coordination between investigating agencies and the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL). Students were introduced to forensic examination procedures and observed how forensic expertise is integrated into criminal investigations.

The visit also covered modern policing infrastructure, with demonstrations of the CCTV Control Room and IT Hub, giving students exposure to technology-enabled policing and digital investigation practices.

The students, accompanied by Mohd Hussain, Research Scholar, Department of Computer Science and Information Technology, Kargil Campus, expressed gratitude to SSP Kargil Nitin Yadav, IPS, the Station House Officer and personnel of Police Station Baroo for facilitating the programme and providing practical guidance.

Special appreciation was extended to Dr Zubair Ahmed, In-charge, FSL Unit, Kargil District, for providing hands-on demonstrations and explaining forensic protocols, including evidence collection and preservation and digital forensic analysis.

The field visit was aimed at strengthening the practical understanding of forensic science students by exposing them to the procedures, technologies and inter-agency coordination involved in real-world policing and forensic investigation.

The Department of Forensic Science also acknowledged the support and guidance of University of Ladakh Vice-Chancellor Prof Saket Kushwaha in facilitating academic initiatives that combine classroom instruction with field-based learning.
