Kisan Goshti in Kharu highlights sustainable Farming and modern Agricultural practices

LEH: The Department of Agriculture organised a Kisan Goshti in Kharu Sub-Division on Wednesday to familiarise farmers with modern agricultural technologies, government welfare schemes, mushroom cultivation, and sustainable farming practices.

The programme aimed to provide practical training, encourage environmentally sustainable agriculture and offer farmers a platform to interact with experts and seek solutions to agricultural challenges.

District Agriculture Officer, Leh, Shakeel-Ur-Rehman, who chaired the programme, urged farmers to revive the cultivation of buckwheat and millet while promoting organic produce. He also briefed participants on various schemes being implemented by the Agriculture Department for the benefit of farmers.

Dr. Kunzang Lamo, Scientist at Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), delivered a session on climate-resilient agriculture, focusing on crop diversification, soil health management and mulching techniques to improve productivity under changing climatic conditions.

Sub-Divisional Agriculture Officer, Leh, Mohd. Ramzan, conducted technical sessions on natural farming, organic farming and crop protection measures, while Agriculture Extension Officer, Kharu, Kunzang Dolma, demonstrated mushroom cultivation techniques, including substrate preparation, spawning, incubation, crop management and harvesting.

The programme witnessed active participation from local farmers. Following the training, officials visited the Ladakh Greenhouses (LGHs) established by participating farmers and observed healthy vegetable crops, indicating the successful adoption of protected cultivation practices.

Officials said the programme was well received by the farming community and formed part of ongoing efforts to promote sustainable agriculture, improve farm productivity and encourage the adoption of modern farming techniques across the district.
