LEH: Ladakh has recorded 3,30,332 tourist arrivals between January and July 2026, already accounting for 98.35 per cent of the total footfall recorded during the entire calendar year 2025, as tourist numbers surged past the one-lakh mark for two consecutive months in June and July.
The Union Territory received 1,05,046 tourists in July, marking a 56.15 per cent increase over the 67,273 visitors recorded in July 2025. The July figure comprised 95,416 domestic and 9,630 foreign tourists.
The surge followed a strong June, when Ladakh recorded 1,07,740 arrivals, up 43.48 per cent from 75,089 in June last year. Domestic visitors accounted for 1,01,060 of the June arrivals, while 6,680 were foreign tourists.
Together, June and July accounted for 2,12,786 visitors, or nearly 65 per cent of the total tourist footfall recorded in Ladakh during the first seven months of the year.
Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena attributed the rise, particularly in domestic tourism, to sustained infrastructure development in Ladakh and the growing response to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s appeal to citizens to explore destinations within India.
Saxena said the administration’s focus would be to ensure that the increase in tourism translates into sustainable livelihood opportunities while protecting Ladakh’s fragile ecology, culture and heritage.
Connectivity Emerges as a Major Driver
The distribution of arrivals during the first seven months also points to the growing role of improved air and road connectivity. Of the 3,30,332 tourists, 1,57,371, or 47.64 per cent, arrived by air. Another 1,16,523 tourists, or 35.27 per cent, entered through the Kashmir route, while 56,438, or 17.09 per cent, travelled via the Manali route.
The expansion of the road network has been substantial since Ladakh became a Union Territory. According to the administration, the road network has increased from 1,799 km in 2019 to more than 4,200 km in 2026, while the number of bridges has risen from 19 to 72.
The reduction in seasonal road closures has further improved accessibility. Zoji La, the principal gateway between Kashmir and Ladakh, which earlier remained closed for around 127 days a year, now has an annual closure period of about 16 days. Similarly, the closure period of the Kargil-Zanskar road has declined from 154 days to 11 days.
Tourism Events and Homestays Add to the Momentum
The summer surge has coincided with a busy calendar of cultural, spiritual and experiential events, including the Hemis Festival, Pratham Sindhu Kumbh, Ladakh Astro Week 2026, Phyang Tsedup and other monastic festivals.
These events have added to Ladakh’s appeal among visitors drawn to its Buddhist heritage, culture, spirituality, adventure tourism and high-altitude experiences.
At the same time, the expansion of homestays has widened the participation of local households in the tourism economy. Their number has risen sharply from 128 in 2019 to 2,275 in 2026, according to the administration.
Tourism-sector reforms have also sought to improve the operating environment for businesses. Measures cited by the administration include reducing compliance requirements, simplifying documentation and granting Industry Status to hotels and guest houses.
With tourist arrivals already nearing the previous year’s full-year figure by July, the administration now faces the task of balancing continued tourism growth with the protection of Ladakh’s limited ecological resources and cultural heritage.
