Leh Police deploys sniffer dog at Upshi  check-post to strengthen anti-drug vigil

LEH: District Police Leh has deployed a trained narco sniffer dog at the Upshi Checkpost as part of its intensified anti-narcotics campaign under the Nasha Mukt Abhiyan, aimed at preventing the smuggling of narcotic substances into the Union Territory of Ladakh.

The enhanced surveillance measures were put into operation on Friday when personnel from the District Police Leh, led by the In-Charge of Kharu Police Post, carried out an extensive vehicle-checking drive at the Upshi Checkpost. Vehicles entering Ladakh from the Manali route were subjected to thorough inspections with the assistance of the trained sniffer dog to detect concealed narcotic substances.

Police officials said the deployment is part of efforts to strengthen border surveillance and curb the movement of illegal drugs into the Union Territory through one of its major entry routes.

Alongside the enforcement drive, police personnel conducted an awareness campaign among motorists and commuters, sensitising them to the provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act and the legal consequences of drug trafficking and peddling.

District Police Leh also appealed to the public to support the ongoing campaign against drug abuse by discouraging substance use among young people and reporting any information related to drug trafficking or peddling. Officials said community participation remains crucial to the success of anti-narcotics initiatives and to maintaining a drug-free environment in Ladakh.

The deployment of the narco sniffer dog forms part of the district police’s broader strategy to enhance preventive policing, strengthen interdiction measures and intensify enforcement against narcotics under the ongoing anti-drug campaign.
