MP Haneefa seeks swift relief, assures MPLADS support for Flood-Hit Kargil

KARGIL: Member of Parliament from Ladakh Mohmad Haneefa Jan on Wednesday called for the immediate restoration of essential services and a comprehensive damage assessment across flood-ravaged parts of Kargil district, while assuring all possible support, including assistance through the Members of Parliament Local Area Development Scheme (MPLADS), to aid relief, rehabilitation and reconstruction efforts.

Expressing grief over the widespread devastation caused by recent flash floods and landslides, the MP urged the administration to accord top priority to restoring road connectivity, drinking water supply, irrigation channels, electricity and other critical public services in the affected areas to ease hardships faced by residents.

Haneefa Jan also pressed for an expeditious assessment of damage to public infrastructure, residential houses, shops, agricultural land, standing crops, orchards, livestock and other private properties, stressing that the exercise was essential for ensuring timely compensation, relief and rehabilitation under the prescribed disaster relief norms.

The MP’s statement comes amid large-scale restoration efforts underway in several flood-affected villages, including Tsangra, Shakar Chiktan, Yokma Kharboo, Sankoo, Bhagdham, Karkitchoo, Latoo, Silmo and Choskore, where flash floods have caused extensive damage to infrastructure and livelihoods.

Stating that he had personally visited the affected villages along with elected councillors to assess the ground situation, Haneefa Jan said the delegation interacted with affected families and reviewed the extent of losses suffered by local communities.

He assured residents that he would extend every possible assistance from his side, including support through the MPLADS fund, wherever permissible, and would pursue additional financial assistance from the Government for the restoration of public infrastructure and rehabilitation of affected households.

The MP also lauded the efforts of the district administration, State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), Border Roads Organisation (BRO), Public Works Department (PWD), Police, Army and other frontline personnel, acknowledging their sustained rescue, relief and restoration work under challenging conditions.

“My thoughts and prayers are with all those affected,” Haneefa Jan said, reaffirming his commitment to pursuing every possible support from the Government to ensure timely relief, comprehensive rehabilitation and long-term reconstruction in the flood-hit areas of Kargil district.
