Northern Command, IIT Jammu join hands to boost indigenous defence innovation

JAMMU: Strengthening India’s indigenous defence capabilities, the Northern Command of the Indian Army and the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Jammu have signed a strategic Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to foster the development of advanced defence technologies in support of the Government’s AtmaNirbhar Bharat initiative.

The partnership seeks to combine the operational expertise of the Indian Army with IIT Jammu’s academic excellence and cutting-edge research capabilities to develop mission-oriented technological solutions for niche operational challenges faced by the armed forces.

The MoU signing ceremony was presided over by Lieutenant General Pratik Sharma, Army Commander, Northern Command, in the presence of Lieutenant General P.K. Mishra, General Officer Commanding, White Knight Corps, Professor Manoj Singh Gaur, Director, IIT Jammu, Professor Bacham Eswar Reddy, Dean (Administration and Operations), Professor Durai Prabhakaran, Dean (Research and Consultancy), senior Army officers, faculty members and students.

Speaking during NAVARAMBH’26, the inaugural foundation course at IIT Jammu, Lt Gen Pratik Sharma underscored the growing importance of collaboration between the armed forces and academic institutions in addressing emerging security challenges through innovation and indigenous research.

He called upon researchers, faculty members and students to work closely with the Indian Army in developing technology-driven solutions for real-time operational problem statements, emphasizing that such partnerships are vital for enhancing national defence preparedness and technological self-reliance.

The Army Commander said that the collaboration reflects a shared commitment to innovation, research and capability development, enabling the armed forces to harness home-grown technologies tailored to India’s unique operational requirements.

The initiative is expected to accelerate research in niche defence domains, promote innovation-driven solutions and strengthen the country’s defence manufacturing ecosystem. By bridging academia and the military, the partnership aims to nurture cutting-edge technologies that will enhance the operational effectiveness of the Indian Army while contributing to India’s long-term vision of self-reliance in defence production.

The collaboration marks another milestone in the Indian Army’s efforts to engage premier academic institutions in developing indigenous technologies that reinforce national security and position India as a global hub for defence innovation.
