NYOMA: Primary Health Centre (PHC) Nyoma has intensified awareness and preventive activities against substance abuse, combining public outreach, screening, counselling and community participation as part of an ongoing campaign for a drug-free society.
The health centre conducted awareness sessions on the harmful effects of tobacco, alcohol and drugs, while substance-use screening was carried out during outpatient department visits to facilitate early identification of individuals requiring support.
Individuals identified with substance-use concerns were provided counselling and motivation to quit, with health workers stressing the importance of family support and involvement in the recovery process.
The awareness campaign also targeted young people and other vulnerable groups around Nyoma market, where participants were sensitised to the health, social and psychological consequences associated with substance abuse.
A street play was organised to underline the consequences of drug addiction and the importance of recovery and rehabilitation. Pledge-taking ceremonies were also held to encourage community commitment towards preventing substance abuse.
Awareness rallies were conducted as part of the campaign to take the message of prevention beyond the health facility and encourage wider public participation in efforts to curb substance abuse.
The activities form part of PHC Nyoma’s broader focus on awareness, early identification and counselling, with the health centre seeking greater community involvement in addressing substance-use concerns across Changthang.
The initiative also places emphasis on prevention and early intervention, particularly among young and vulnerable people, while linking those identified with substance-use concerns to counselling and support aimed at recovery.
