LEH: Farmers, scientists, government officials, academics and other stakeholders on Monday discussed measures to strengthen Ladakh’s medicinal plants sector, with focus on conservation, sustainable cultivation and entrepreneurship at a workshop held at the School of Agricultural Sciences & Technology (SAS&T), Stakna.
The Stakeholders Meet-cum-Workshop on “Strengthening of Medicinal Plants Sector through Conservation, Sustainable Cultivation and Entrepreneurship Development” was organised by the Regional cum Facilitation Centre Northern Region II (RCFC NR-II), SKUAST Kashmir, in collaboration with SAS&T, Leh, University of Ladakh.
The discussions centred on the potential of medicinal plants in the regional context, sustainable cultivation practices, available government support and the scope for developing livelihood and entrepreneurship opportunities around the sector.
Dr. Tashi Thinlas, Director Health Services/Ayush and Chief Executive Officer, State Medicinal Plant Board, UT Ladakh, who attended the workshop as Guest of Honour, highlighted the scope of medicinal plants and the need to address existing bottlenecks affecting the sector.
Dr. Thinlas also spoke about sustainable cultivation and called for greater collaboration among stakeholders to address the challenges associated with the development of the medicinal plants sector.
The workshop brought together farmers, officials, scientists, faculty members, students and other delegates associated with medicinal plants, providing them a platform to exchange experiences and discuss practical measures for conservation, cultivation and entrepreneurship development.
Prof. Maheshwar Singh Kanwar, Associate Director/Dean, SAS&T, University of Ladakh, delivered the welcome address. Dr. Kunzes Angmo, Scientist-cum-Assistant Professor, SAS&T, made a presentation on medicinal plants cultivation and outlined their importance and potential in the region.
Dr. Sonam Dawa, District Horticulture Officer, Department of Horticulture, Leh, delivered the keynote address, providing an overview of schemes available in the region and sharing field experience from the horticulture sector.
Prof. Tariq H. Masoodi, Nodal Coordinator, RCFC NR-II, made an introductory presentation on the mandate, achievements and vision of the Centre, including its initiatives for strengthening the medicinal plants sector.
The programme also featured an address by Chief Guest Rajesh S. Kumar (IFS), Additional Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (APCCF), Department of Forest, Ecology and Environment, UT Ladakh.
The programme began with registration of participants and delegates, followed by a traditional Khatak ceremony and presentation of mementos to the dignitaries.
The workshop concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr. Sofi Imtiyaz Ali, Project Manager, RCFC NR-II.
