SNM Hospital Leh conducts MAA Program Training during World Breastfeeding Week

LEH: SNM District Hospital, Leh, on Wednesday organised a capacity-building programme under the Mothers’ Absolute Affection (MAA) Programme to equip frontline healthcare workers with enhanced knowledge and counselling skills for promoting optimal breastfeeding practices during the observance of World Breastfeeding Week (August 1–7).

Held under the global theme, “Breastfeeding for a Sustainable Start in Life: Strengthen What Works,” the programme focused on strengthening the ability of healthcare workers to support mothers through evidence-based breastfeeding guidance in line with national MAA Programme guidelines.

The training programme was attended by the Deputy Chief Medical Officer, Leh, while Consultant Paediatrician Dr Tsering Norphel of SNM District Hospital served as the resource person. Addressing the participants, Dr Norphel highlighted the importance of early initiation of breastfeeding, exclusive breastfeeding during the first six months of life, continued breastfeeding thereafter, and structured counselling to enable mothers to adopt recommended infant feeding practices.

The technical sessions combined classroom discussions with practical learning. Participants underwent an interactive session on breastfeeding management, followed by a live demonstration and counselling skills exercise conducted in the Post Gynaecology Ward, allowing healthcare workers to apply clinical guidance in a hospital setting.

Hospital authorities said the initiative was designed to strengthen the competencies of frontline healthcare workers who regularly interact with pregnant women and new mothers, enabling them to provide consistent counselling and sustained breastfeeding support from childbirth through infancy.

The programme formed part of the hospital’s observance of World Breastfeeding Week, which is dedicated to promoting breastfeeding as a cornerstone of maternal and child health while encouraging healthcare institutions to reinforce support systems for mothers and newborns.
