LEH: The Department of Surgery at SNM Hospital, Leh, has successfully performed six laparoscopic cholecystectomies during a single operating session, reinforcing the hospital’s expanding capacity to deliver minimally invasive surgical care and advanced treatment facilities in Ladakh.
The surgeries were conducted on June 29 under general anaesthesia between 10:30 am and 3:30 pm. The patients, comprising five women and one man aged between 30 and 45 years, belonged to different parts of Ladakh. According to the hospital, all six procedures were completed successfully without interruption during the scheduled operating session.
Laparoscopic cholecystectomy, a minimally invasive procedure for the removal of the gallbladder, is associated with smaller incisions, reduced post-operative pain and quicker recovery compared with conventional open surgery. The successful completion of six such procedures in a single session reflects the hospital’s growing capability to undertake specialised surgical interventions within the Union Territory.
Hospital authorities attributed the achievement to the coordinated efforts of the surgical team, including surgeons, anaesthesiologists, nursing staff, operating theatre personnel and other support staff, whose collaboration ensured the smooth execution of the procedures.
Officials said the development represents another step in strengthening specialised healthcare services at SNM Hospital and broadening access to modern surgical treatment for residents of Ladakh. They added that the expansion of laparoscopic services is expected to reduce the need for patients requiring routine gallbladder surgery to seek treatment outside the region.
The hospital reiterated its commitment to further strengthening minimally invasive surgical services as part of its ongoing efforts to improve the quality and accessibility of healthcare across Ladakh.
