TRAI, Cyber Unit Leh conduct Cyber Safety workshop for Rural Women

LEH: The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), in collaboration with the Cyber Unit Leh and the Rural Development Department, on Thursday organised a cybercrime awareness programme for members of Self Help Groups (SHGs), focusing on digital safety, cyber fraud prevention and secure use of online services.

Held at Hotel Mountain View, Leh, the programme brought together SHG members from Thiksay, Shey, Chuchot, Phyang and neighbouring villages as part of an initiative to strengthen cyber awareness among rural communities, particularly women.

Resource persons from TRAI and the Cyber Unit Leh conducted sessions on identifying and preventing common cyber threats, including phishing attacks, fraudulent calls and messages, digital payment fraud, social media privacy risks and online financial scams.

Participants were also given practical demonstrations on creating strong passwords, enabling two-factor authentication, identifying fake websites and suspicious links, and reporting cybercrime incidents to the Cyber Unit Leh.

The programme placed particular emphasis on protecting personal and financial information while promoting digital literacy and encouraging the safe use of online banking and digital services. Officials said the initiative aimed to equip rural women with the knowledge and confidence to navigate digital platforms securely.

The interactive session concluded with participants engaging in a question-and-answer discussion, following which they were provided with printed awareness material and contact details for reporting cybercrime. Officials said the initiative reflected the joint commitment of TRAI, the Rural Development Department, Leh, and the Cyber Unit Leh to expanding cyber safety awareness and strengthening digital resilience in rural areas through sustained outreach programmes.
