Tsewang Nurboo hails LAHDC expansion to all seven Districts, lauds creation of 17 new Tehsils

KARGIL: BJP Ladakh State Spokesperson Tsewang Nurboo on Tuesday welcomed the announcement of extending the Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council (LAHDC) framework to all seven districts of the Union Territory, describing it as a step towards strengthening grassroots governance and improving administrative outreach in remote regions.

Addressing a press conference here, Nurboo thanked the Government of India, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, for the proposed expansion of the autonomous council system and for the creation of 17 new tehsils, stating that the decisions reflected the Centre’s commitment to decentralised governance and balanced regional development.

He said the extension of the LAHDC system would empower local communities, deepen democratic decentralisation and improve public participation in the planning and implementation of developmental programmes across Ladakh.

Referring to the recent administrative restructuring in the Union Territory, Nurboo said the creation of 17 new tehsils has increased the total number of tehsils from 15 to 32, enabling the administration to operationalise the five newly created districts and improve access to government services in remote and border areas.

He noted that the reorganisation was intended to streamline revenue administration and reduce the difficulties faced by residents of far-flung areas, many of whom have traditionally travelled long distances across mountainous terrain to avail themselves of basic government services.

Nurboo further said the creation of five new districts—Drass, Zanskar, Nubra, Sham and Changthang—raising the total number of districts in Ladakh from two to seven, would contribute to improved governance, administrative efficiency and service delivery in geographically challenging regions.

Reiterating the BJP’s support for the administrative reforms, the party spokesperson maintained that extending the LAHDC system to all seven districts would strengthen local self-governance and facilitate more responsive and inclusive administration across the Union Territory.
