KARGIL: Thousands of mourners on Thursday participated in peaceful processions across Kargil to observe the 9th of Muharram, commemorating the events of Karbala and the martyrdom of Hazrat Abbas (A.S.) ahead of Youm-e-Ashura.
The observance, organised by Jamiat-ul-Ulama Isna Asharia Kargil (JUIAK) and the Imam Khomeini Memorial Trust (IKMT) Kargil, witnessed large gatherings in different parts of the town, where mourners took part in traditional Matam, Marsiya and Nauha recitations, along with remembrance assemblies dedicated to the martyrs of Karbala.
Alongside the religious processions, organisers and volunteers conducted a series of humanitarian initiatives, including free medical camps, blood donation drives and Sabeel-e-Imam Hussain (A.S.) stalls that provided drinking water and refreshments to mourners and visitors. The blood donation campaigns formed part of the community service activities held during the observance.
The District Administration Kargil put in place extensive civic arrangements to facilitate the smooth conduct of the processions. Water tankers were stationed at multiple locations, while departments ensured the availability of essential public services for participants.
Kargil Police, supported by other security and emergency agencies, managed law and order, regulated traffic and coordinated public safety measures throughout the day, enabling the processions to proceed peacefully.
Observed annually on the eve of Youm-e-Ashura, the 9th of Muharram holds special significance in the remembrance of the events of Karbala and draws large participation from the local community across Kargil district.
