Second Phase of Census 2027 kicks off in Kargil
KARGIL: Chairman and Chief Executive Councillor (CEC), LAHDC Kargil, Dr Mohd Jaffer Akhoon on Monday called for accurate and comprehensive household data collection as the second phase of Census 2027 — Population Enumeration commenced in the district, stressing that reliable Census data would form the basis for evidence-based planning and development interventions.
Dr Akhoon became the first person in Kargil to complete Self Enumeration for the Population Enumeration phase, formally launching the process at the Council Secretariat, LAHDC Kargil.
The Self Enumeration window will remain open from August 17 to August 31, while door-to-door Population Enumeration by designated Enumerators will be conducted from September 1 to September 30.
Emphasising the importance of the exercise, Dr Akhoon said Census data would provide a baseline for understanding the demographic, social and economic profile of the country, Union Territory, district and villages, and help align development programmes with the actual requirements of the population.
He urged the people of Kargil to cooperate with Census authorities and provide accurate information, while directing officials and Enumerators to ensure complete door-to-door coverage so that authentic data from every household is captured.
The CEC described the Census as a comprehensive record of the region and its population and said the quality of data collected during the exercise would have a direct bearing on evidence-based policymaking and development planning.
During Population Enumeration, Enumerators will collect demographic and socio-economic particulars of household members, including name, sex, relationship to the head of household, date of birth, caste, literacy, education, fertility and migration, among other details.
Dr Akhoon also appreciated the Census trainers, administration, officers, officials and other personnel involved in the exercise, and stressed that the enumeration should be conducted with utmost sincerity, precision and diligence.
The launch programme was attended by Executive Councillors Aga Syed Ali, Aga Syed Mujtaba and Altaf Hussain, besides Tehsildar Kargil Ayaz Ahmed Bhat.
Amit Kumar Bhargav, Deputy Chief Principal Census Officer, J&K and Ladakh UT; AD Census Vijay Kumar; Master Trainer Mohd Iqbal; and District Coordinator Seddique Hussain were also present, along with other officials and staff associated with the Census exercise.
Chief Planning Officer Kargil Kacho Mohd Hussain, S.O./Additional District Census Officer/DSEO Kargil Khadim Hussain and other staff participated in the programme.
With the CEC completing Self Enumeration, the process has formally opened for residents across Kargil. The Self Enumeration facility will remain available until August 31, after which Enumerators will undertake household visits throughout September.
The district administration has urged residents to provide complete and correct information to ensure that the Census reflects the demographic and socio-economic realities of Kargil and supports informed planning for future development.
