GoC Dorje Division flags off Army expedition to Ladakh’s highest peaks

LEH: As part of the 27th Kargil Vijay Diwas commemorations, the Indian Army on Thursday flagged off a mountaineering expedition to Chamser Kangri (6,622 metres) and Lungser Kangri (6,666 metres) from the Hall of Fame in Leh.

The expedition was flagged off by the General Officer Commanding (GOC), Dorje Division of the Fire and Fury Corps, marking the beginning of a challenging mission through the rugged and remote Trans-Himalayan region of Ladakh.

According to Army officials, the team aims to become the first military expedition to successfully summit both peaks during a single mission. The undertaking is designed to pay tribute to the soldiers who made the supreme sacrifice in the service of the nation and whose valour is remembered during the annual Kargil Vijay Diwas observances.

The expedition will test the endurance, technical skills and resilience of the mountaineers as they navigate some of the most demanding high-altitude terrain in the region. Rising above 6,600 metres, Chamser Kangri and Lungser Kangri are among the prominent peaks of eastern Ladakh and present formidable challenges owing to harsh weather conditions, difficult approaches and thin air.

Army officials said the mission reflects the spirit of courage, determination and adventure that has long been associated with the Indian Army’s operations in the Himalayas. Beyond its mountaineering objective, the expedition seeks to inspire younger generations by showcasing the values of perseverance, teamwork and commitment to national service. The expedition forms part of a series of events being organised across Ladakh to commemorate the 27th anniversary of India’s victory in the Kargil War and honour the legacy of the nation’s fallen heroes.
