KHALTSE: A Drug Abuse Awareness Programme was organised at Hemisshukpachan Panchayat on Wednesday, bringing together local residents, Panchayat representatives and officials from various departments to strengthen community awareness against substance abuse and promote preventive measures.

The programme focused on educating participants about the social, psychological and health consequences of drug addiction, while highlighting the importance of early intervention, counselling and rehabilitation in addressing the growing challenge of substance abuse.

Among those present were Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) Liker, Gurmeet Namgial; Station House Officer (SHO) Khaltse, Tsewang Nurboo; Psychiatrist Dr. Padma; members of the District Drug De-addiction Awareness Team; Ms. Purnima from the Forensic Team; and other stakeholders.

Addressing the gathering, resource persons underscored the harmful effects of drug abuse on individuals, families and society, stressing that awareness and community participation remain critical in preventing addiction and supporting recovery efforts. They called for greater vigilance and collective responsibility to safeguard young people from the risks associated with narcotics and substance misuse.

The speakers also encouraged youth to adopt healthy and productive lifestyles and highlighted the role of families, educational institutions and community organisations in creating a supportive environment that discourages drug use.

Officials from the awareness team briefed participants on available counselling services, rehabilitation support and the importance of seeking timely assistance for individuals affected by addiction.

The programme concluded with a vote of thanks and a collective pledge by participants to work together towards building a drug-free, healthy and socially responsible community.

The awareness drive forms part of ongoing efforts by the administration and associated agencies to strengthen public outreach and encourage community-based action against substance abuse in the region.
