ZANSKAR: Hundreds of students at Government Higher Secondary School, Phey, participated in an awareness programme on drug and substance abuse organised under the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan, with officials from the Social Welfare, Police and Medical departments urging young people to stay away from drugs and make responsible choices.
The programme was organised by the Tehsil Social Welfare Office, Zanskar, in collaboration with the Police Department and Medical Department, and was attended by the school’s principal, teaching and non-teaching staff and students.
Tehsil Social Welfare Officer Ghulam Rasool Lal welcomed the participants and outlined the role of the Social Welfare Department in prevention, awareness, counselling, rehabilitation and community participation in addressing substance abuse.
The participants also took the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan Pledge, reaffirming their commitment to contributing towards a drug-free society.
During the programme, Dr Sajjad Hussain from the Medical Department explained the physical and psychological effects of drug and substance abuse. He cautioned students about the impact of addiction on health, education, family life and future prospects.
Sub-Inspector Stanzin Choszom of the Police Department briefed the students on the legal and social consequences of drug abuse and stressed the need to avoid drugs and make responsible choices.
The Principal of HSS Phey also addressed the gathering, highlighting the wider impact of addiction on individuals, families and society and urging students to remain alert and avoid drugs and other harmful substances.
An interactive question-and-answer session followed, with students raising questions on prevention, rehabilitation, drug abuse and its legal consequences. The resource persons responded to the queries during the session.
The programme concluded with a vote of thanks by Feroz Ali, Social Worker, who acknowledged the cooperation of the school administration, resource persons, staff and students.
The Tehsil Social Welfare Office reiterated its commitment to strengthening awareness and preventive measures under the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan and encouraged young people to contribute as responsible ambassadors for a healthy and drug-free Zanskar.
