Ladakh University clinches Late Qamar Ali Akhoon Memorial Volleyball League title

CEC Kargil Dr. Jaffer Akhoon attends final, announces sports grants

KARGIL: The University of Ladakh emerged champions of the Late Qamar Ali Akhoon Memorial Volleyball League 2026, defeating Team TRP in the final as Chairman and Chief Executive Councillor (CEC), LAHDC Kargil, Dr. Mohd Jaffer Akhoon, announced additional financial assistance for the finalists and organisers during the tournament’s closing ceremony at Khree Sultan Cho Sports Stadium.

The champions received a cash prize of ₹30,000 and a trophy, while Team TRP secured the runners-up title with a cash award of ₹20,000 and a trophy. In addition, Dr. Akhoon announced ₹50,000 each for the champion and runners-up through the Youth Services and Sports Department to procure sports equipment. He also sanctioned ₹1 lakh for the organisers to strengthen sports infrastructure and support future tournaments.

Organised from July 12 to 18, the week-long tournament featured 18 teams from the Drass region, Barsoo, Sankoo, Batalik and neighbouring villages, providing a competitive platform for emerging volleyball players.

Addressing the gathering, Dr. Akhoon said LAHDC Kargil is expanding investment in sports infrastructure to create better opportunities for youth. He highlighted ongoing efforts to develop facilities for ice hockey, football, archery, ring cricket, indoor games, AstroTurf grounds, indoor stadiums and multipurpose sports halls across the district.

Reaffirming the Council’s commitment to overall development, the CEC said sustained investment in education, healthcare, tourism and sports remains central to improving public welfare and creating opportunities for young people.

Dr. Akhoon commended the organisers for successfully conducting the tournament and said such events encourage discipline, teamwork and sportsmanship while helping identify and nurture local talent. He urged young athletes to pursue excellence in both academics and sports.

The CEC also said the Council has taken up with the Union Territory Administration the proposal for an instant funding mechanism under the Revenue Component to facilitate timely financial assistance during emergencies and urgent public needs.

The closing ceremony was attended by social activist Sajjad Kargili, tournament organisers, players and sports enthusiasts from across Kargil district.
