Traffic Police Leh launches crackdown on HMVs; 95 Challans issued

LEH: Traffic Police Leh launched a special enforcement drive against Heavy Motor Vehicles (HMVs) across Leh town on Friday, issuing 95 challans, including one court challan, as part of efforts to improve traffic discipline and ease congestion on busy urban roads.

The enforcement campaign, conducted under the provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, focused on trucks, dumpers, tankers and other commercial vehicles, whose movement has been identified as a major contributor to traffic congestion within the town.

During the drive, traffic personnel carried out comprehensive inspections of vehicle documents, including Driving Licence, Registration Certificate, Insurance Certificate, Fitness Certificate, Pollution Under Control Certificate and transport permits.

Officials also intensified action against a range of traffic violations, including overloading of goods, deviation from authorised permit conditions and designated routes, operation of vehicles without valid documents, obstruction to the smooth flow of traffic and violation of the timings prescribed by the District Magistrate, Leh, governing the entry of Heavy Motor Vehicles into the town.

According to Traffic Police Leh, 95 challans amounting to Rs 44,600 were issued during the enforcement drive, with one case referred to court for legal proceedings.

The special drive forms part of the traffic police’s continuing efforts to strengthen compliance with road transport regulations, improve traffic management and enhance road safety in Leh, particularly during periods of increased vehicular movement.
