DURBUK: The Sheep Husbandry Department, Durbuk has launched an awareness campaign to promote the production and marketing of organic livestock manure, reinforcing the Union Territory of Ladakh’s commitment to achieving 100 per cent organic farming and eliminating the use of chemical insecticides and pesticides.
The campaign, led by Dr. Nasreen and the departmental team, began with awareness camps in the villages of Satto, Kherapullu and Barma, where livestock breeders and local residents were sensitised to the environmental and economic advantages of organic manure.
The initiative aims to encourage livestock owners to convert animal waste into commercially viable organic manure ahead of the upcoming agricultural season while supporting sustainable farming practices across the region.
During interactive sessions, livestock breeders and members of Self-Help Groups (SHGs) expressed their willingness to package and market organic manure as an additional source of income.
Participants also urged the department to facilitate transportation and fuel support, provide manure bag sealing machines, establish retail outlets near central markets and introduce a uniform pricing mechanism for organic manure across the Union Territory.
Officials said the awareness campaign would continue next week, with the departmental team visiting the remaining villages of the Durbuk region to expand community participation and promote wider adoption of organic farming practices.
The initiative forms part of Ladakh’s broader strategy to encourage sustainable agriculture by reducing dependence on chemical inputs while creating market opportunities for livestock-based organic products.
