LG briefs Parliamentary Panel on Ladakh’s water scarcity, fragile ecosystem

LEH: In an important engagement during its visit to Ladakh, the Parliamentary Standing Committee on External Affairs, chaired by Member of Parliament Dr. Shashi Tharoor, held detailed discussions with Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh, Vinai Kumar Saxena the other day on the region’s pressing environmental and developmental concerns and the measures being undertaken to address them.

The interaction focused extensively on the unique vulnerabilities of Ladakh, particularly its fragile ecosystem, environmental degradation, and growing water scarcity challenges. The committee sought detailed information on the key issues confronting the Union Territory and the ongoing efforts aimed at ensuring sustainable development while preserving the region’s delicate ecological balance.

During the meeting, the committee was briefed about several major initiatives launched to mitigate the adverse impacts of climate change and environmental stress in Ladakh. Among the flagship interventions highlighted was Project Him Sarovar, which aims to strengthen water conservation and storage infrastructure across the region.

Another important initiative presented before the committee was the construction of Rock Check Dams under the Sindhu Jal Samridhi Abhiyan, designed to improve water retention, recharge groundwater, and enhance local water security in vulnerable areas. The committee was also informed about extensive plantation drives being carried out across Ladakh to increase green cover and combat ecological degradation.

The discussions underscored the growing importance of climate-resilient infrastructure in high-altitude regions such as Ladakh, where changing weather patterns, shrinking water resources, and environmental fragility pose long-term challenges to livelihoods and development.

According to officials present during the interaction, the members of the committee appreciated the proactive and innovative measures being implemented in Ladakh. The panel acknowledged the significance of community-oriented water conservation projects and ecological restoration efforts being undertaken in the Union Territory.

The committee also assured its full cooperation and support for initiatives aimed at strengthening environmental sustainability, water management, and climate adaptation in Ladakh.

The visit of the Parliamentary Standing Committee is being viewed as an important opportunity to bring Ladakh’s ecological concerns and developmental priorities to the attention of national policymakers. The discussions are expected to contribute to greater policy support and institutional backing for sustainable development initiatives in the region.

The interaction concluded on a positive note, with expressions of gratitude for the committee’s appreciation of Ladakh’s ongoing efforts and its commitment to extending all possible assistance in addressing the region’s environmental and water-related challenges.
