Leh: A large number of mourners participated in the Ashura procession that passed through the Main Market area of Leh on Friday, marking the 10th day of Muharram with solemnity, devotion, and remembrance.
The procession, organized by the local Shia Muslim community, witnessed men, women, and children gathering to commemorate the martyrdom of Imam Hussain ibn Ali and his companions in the historic Battle of Karbala. Participants marched through designated routes carrying religious banners and reciting elegies (marsiyas) and nohas in tribute to the sacrifices made at Karbala.
The Ashura observance reflected the enduring message of truth, justice, sacrifice, and resistance against oppression, values associated with Imam Hussain’s supreme sacrifice. Religious scholars addressed gatherings, highlighting the moral and spiritual significance of Karbala and urging people to uphold the principles of compassion, unity, and righteousness in their daily lives.
The procession moved peacefully through Leh Main Market under tight security arrangements. Personnel from the Ladakh Police, traffic police, and civil administration were deployed to regulate traffic, ensure public safety, and facilitate the smooth conduct of the religious event. Volunteers from local organizations provided drinking water and other essential services to participants.
Residents and visitors watched the procession with respect, reflecting Ladakh’s long-standing tradition of communal harmony and mutual respect among different faiths and communities. The peaceful conduct of the procession underscored the spirit of brotherhood that characterizes the region during major religious and cultural observances.
Ashura, observed on the tenth day of the Islamic month of Muharram, holds profound significance for Muslims across the world, particularly the Shia community. It commemorates the martyrdom of Imam Hussain and his followers at Karbala in present-day Iraq in 680 CE, an event that continues to symbolize the struggle for justice, dignity, and moral courage against tyranny.
The Ashura procession in Leh concluded peacefully, with participants offering prayers for peace, harmony, and the well-being of humanity. Authorities appreciated the cooperation of the public, volunteers, and organizers in ensuring the observance passed off smoothly and without incident.
