KARGIL: The Department of Political Science at the University of Ladakh, Kargil Campus, held an academic deliberative programme on Monday to examine the principles of democratic governance, contemporary challenges to democratic systems and the role of informed public participation in strengthening democracy.
The programme, organised to mark the International Day of Democracy, brought faculty members and students together for an academic exchange on various dimensions of democracy and its functioning in contemporary society.
The deliberations underlined that democracy extends beyond the formal institutions of government and rests on a broader set of values and practices, including popular participation, equality, freedom, pluralism, accountability, dialogue and respect for differing viewpoints.
Participants also discussed challenges confronting democratic systems in the contemporary period, emphasising the need for informed, responsible and constructive participation to strengthen democratic practices.
The academic engagement was intended to encourage students to critically examine democratic institutions and processes while developing a deeper understanding of their responsibilities as participants in a democratic society.
The programme also highlighted the role of universities and other institutions of higher education in cultivating democratic consciousness, encouraging critical thinking and providing students with opportunities to engage constructively with political and social issues.
The discussions concluded with an emphasis on democratic values as a foundation for inclusive, accountable and responsive governance, while reinforcing the importance of sustained public participation in strengthening democratic institutions and practices.
