LEH: In a swift and well-coordinated rescue operation, Kharu Police safely evacuated 35 stranded passengers, including foreign nationals, after multiple landslides blocked the Shang Sumdo–Chokdo road, leaving vehicles and travellers stranded in the remote area.
The rescue operation, which lasted nearly six hours, was carried out under challenging conditions after landslides rendered the road impassable, posing significant difficulties for commuters and tourists. Despite the adverse terrain and disrupted connectivity, the police ensured that every stranded passenger was brought to safety without any injuries.
According to reports, Kharu Police immediately mobilised rescue teams upon receiving information about the road blockage. Working in close coordination with the Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM), Kharu, and the Lambardar of Shang, the teams assessed the situation, established communication with the stranded passengers and executed a carefully planned evacuation.
The seamless coordination between the police, civil administration and local community representatives played a crucial role in the successful completion of the rescue mission. The timely response helped avert any untoward incident despite the difficult weather and terrain conditions.
The rescue once again highlighted the preparedness and commitment of Ladakh Police in responding to emergencies in the Union Territory’s rugged and high-altitude landscape, where landslides and road blockages frequently disrupt movement, particularly during the monsoon season.
