KARGIL: Students of the Kargil Campus of the University of Ladakh visited the Solid Waste Management Facility in Kargil to gain practical exposure to waste collection, segregation, treatment and resource recovery as part of the Swachhta Hi Seva–2026 initiative.
The industrial visit, held on September 24, was jointly organised by the Departments of Environmental Science, Disaster Management and Physical Education, Kargil Campus, in collaboration with the Tribal Research Institute.
The visit was aimed at supplementing classroom learning with field-based experience and giving students an understanding of how solid waste is managed at an operational level.
During the visit, students observed various stages of the waste management process, including collection, segregation, treatment and utilisation of segregated waste. They were also briefed on the practical challenges involved in managing solid waste and the scope for improving waste management practices in the Kargil region.
Plant Manager Er Anis and Supervisor Mahboob explained the facility’s operational capacity, segregation procedures, treatment methods and processes involved in the utilisation of segregated waste.
The students were also familiarised with the objectives and field-level implementation of Swachhta Hi Seva–2026, particularly its focus on cleanliness, sanitation, waste segregation, resource recovery and environmental awareness.
The organisers said the field exposure helped students relate academic concepts to practical environmental management and encouraged them to adopt more responsible and sustainable waste-management practices.
The student group was accompanied by Dr Satya Narain, Dr Sonam, Dr Asif and Dr Naureen, who supervised the visit and ensured its smooth and safe conduct. The visit concluded with students gaining practical insights into sustainable waste management and the challenges associated with its implementation in the region.
