LEH: Anjuman Moin-ul-Islam (AMI), Leh, celebrated the 80th Independence Day with flag-hoisting ceremonies at the historic Jama Masjid Leh and Islamia School Leh, with its leadership calling for national unity, peace, communal harmony and responsible citizenship.
The celebrations were attended by members of the Executive and General Council of AMI Leh, the Speaker of AMI Leh, community representatives and a large gathering of people.
At the Jama Masjid, the National Flag was hoisted by AMI Leh President Advocate Mohammad Shafi Lassu along with Haji Abdul Majid, a 94-year-old veteran of the Indian Army.
The participation of the veteran Army serviceman formed a prominent part of the celebrations, with AMI members and participants recalling the contribution and sacrifices of soldiers in safeguarding the country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
The occasion also saw tributes to freedom fighters and citizens whose contributions helped shape independent India.
Addressing the gathering, AMI Leh leaders stressed the need to uphold national unity, peace, brotherhood and mutual respect. They also underlined the responsibilities of citizens and the need to strengthen the values of the Constitution through collective effort and social harmony.
The celebrations at both venues reflected the community’s expression of patriotism and commitment to the country, while also highlighting the importance of education and social development.
The presence of a 94-year-old Army veteran alongside the AMI leadership also provided a generational link to the country’s armed forces and their service to the nation.
The programme concluded with a renewed commitment by the community towards strengthening brotherhood, promoting education and social development, and contributing to the progress and prosperity of Ladakh and the country.
