LEH: The District Tobacco Control Cell (DTCC) COTPA Enforcement Squad issued 24 challans during a joint enforcement drive conducted in Chuchot, Shey and Choglamsar as part of efforts to strengthen compliance with the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act (COTPA), 2003.

The enforcement operation targeted violations of the tobacco control law, with action taken against individuals found smoking in public places and shopkeepers selling loose cigarettes in contravention of the provisions of the Act.

The joint inspection was undertaken to reinforce compliance with COTPA and discourage practices prohibited under the legislation. Officials said the drive formed part of the District Tobacco Control Cell’s continuing enforcement strategy aimed at reducing tobacco consumption and ensuring adherence to public health regulations.

Besides initiating enforcement action, members of the squad conducted awareness activities during the inspection, sensitising members of the public and vendors about the health hazards associated with tobacco consumption and the legal obligations prescribed under the Act.

The District Tobacco Control Cell reiterated its commitment to carrying out regular enforcement drives across the district to strengthen implementation of tobacco control measures and promote compliance with the provisions of COTPA.

Officials also appealed to residents, commercial establishments and vendors to cooperate with enforcement agencies in fostering a tobacco-free environment and ensuring strict adherence to the law.
