920-metre Cut & Cover Tunnel at 12,500 ft recognised as Best Road Safety Technology Initiative

LEH: The Border Roads Organisation (BRO) has added another milestone to its legacy of engineering excellence by winning the Best Road Safety Technology category at the RAHSTA Awards 2026 for its remarkable 920-metre Cut & Cover Tunnel in Eastern Ladakh.

Constructed at an altitude of over 12,500 feet in one of the world’s most challenging high-altitude terrains, the tunnel has been recognised as an outstanding example of innovation-driven infrastructure development aimed at enhancing road safety, operational efficiency and all-weather connectivity in the strategically important region.

The prestigious recognition highlights BRO’s sustained efforts towards developing resilient infrastructure in Ladakh, where extreme weather conditions, heavy snowfall, avalanches, steep gradients and rugged terrain pose significant challenges to road construction and maintenance.

The 920-metre Cut & Cover Tunnel represents a major engineering achievement, designed to provide safer movement along critical routes by reducing vulnerability to harsh climatic conditions and ensuring improved mobility for both civilian and strategic requirements. The project showcases the organisation’s ability to deliver complex infrastructure solutions in some of the most demanding environments on earth.

The award is a testament to BRO’s focus on adopting advanced technologies and innovative engineering practices while maintaining the highest standards of safety and quality. It also underscores the organisation’s crucial role in strengthening connectivity and supporting national development in remote border areas.

Celebrating the achievement, BRO stated that the honour reflects its unwavering commitment to engineering excellence, innovation, road safety and nation-building. The organisation continues to undertake challenging infrastructure projects across frontier regions, contributing significantly to India’s strategic preparedness and socio-economic growth.

With this recognition, the Cut & Cover Tunnel in Eastern Ladakh joins the growing list of BRO projects that demonstrate India’s capability to build world-class infrastructure in extreme terrains while prioritising safety and sustainability.
