NEW DELHI: Chairman and Chief Executive Councillor (CEC), Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council (LAHDC), Kargil, Dr. Mohd Jaffer Akhoon, on Friday urged the Centre to expedite the commencement of civil flight operations at Kargil Airport and pressed for consideration of the demand for district reorganisation, during a meeting with Union Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s Office, Dr. Jitendra Singh, in New Delhi.

The meeting focused on issues relating to connectivity, administrative restructuring and infrastructure development in Kargil and the newly created districts of the Union Territory.

Flagging the long-pending demand for civil aviation services, Dr. Akhoon emphasised that the early operationalisation of Kargil Airport for civilian flights is essential to improve regional connectivity, promote tourism and support the district’s socio-economic development. He sought the Union Minister’s personal intervention to facilitate the commencement of civil flight operations at the earliest.

The CEC also raised the issue of district reorganisation, drawing attention to the demand for the creation of an additional district that remained outside the ambit of the recent administrative restructuring in Ladakh. He urged the Union Minister to pursue the matter at the highest level for early and favourable consideration.

Apart from these issues, Dr. Akhoon sought enhanced central support for infrastructure development, healthcare facilities and the education sector in Kargil and the newly constituted districts, stating that sustained investment in these sectors would be vital for balanced regional development.

Responding to the issues raised during the meeting, Dr. Jitendra Singh assured the CEC that the concerns would receive priority consideration and conveyed his support for addressing the matters placed before him.

Dr. Akhoon expressed gratitude to the Union Minister for granting the meeting and for his assurance of support on issues concerning Kargil and the wider Ladakh region.
