KARGIL: In an effort to strengthen rural livelihoods and expand market opportunities for local entrepreneurs, the Cooperative Department, Kargil, in collaboration with the National Rural Livelihood Mission (NRLM), has established dedicated Cooperative Outlets to provide Self-Help Groups (SHGs) with a permanent platform to market and sell their products.
The initiative, undertaken under the guidance of Deputy Commissioner Rakesh Kumar, is aimed at improving market access for SHG members by increasing the visibility of locally manufactured products while creating sustainable income opportunities for artisans and rural entrepreneurs across the district.
Officials said the initiative was facilitated with the active involvement of Deputy Registrar, Cooperative Department, Dr. Sarwar Shahzad, who played a central role in establishing and promoting the retail outlets.
One of the outlets has been functioning successfully for the past three to four months at a prominent location near Gandhi Park in Baroo, while another has been established at Kharul to improve accessibility for consumers and provide wider marketing avenues for SHG products.
The outlets offer a range of products manufactured by members of Self-Help Groups, providing them with direct access to customers and reducing dependence on conventional marketing channels. The initiative is expected to enhance product visibility, encourage local enterprise and improve the economic prospects of women-led and community-based livelihood groups.
Officials said the Cooperative Department and NRLM are working to strengthen grassroots entrepreneurship by creating structured market linkages that enable SHGs to achieve greater financial sustainability through regular retail sales.
The department has appealed to residents and visitors to support local producers by purchasing products from the Cooperative Outlets, stating that greater public participation would not only encourage local entrepreneurship but also contribute to strengthening the district’s rural economy through sustained community-led enterprise.
The initiative forms part of the administration’s broader efforts to promote inclusive economic development by creating opportunities for locally produced goods to access organised retail spaces and reach a wider consumer base.
