LEH: Emphasising the growing importance of evidence-based governance and informed policymaking, the Directorate of Economics and Statistics, Ladakh, on Monday observed National Statistics Day with a programme highlighting the role of reliable data in socio-economic planning, public administration and developmental decision-making.

The event, organised to commemorate the birth anniversary of eminent statistician Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis, brought together senior officials and staff of the Directorate, who underlined the need to strengthen statistical systems to support effective governance and improve policy outcomes.

Director of Economics and Statistics, Tsewang Gyalson, said statistical information has become an integral component of governance as well as everyday life, and stressed that the adoption of modern tools and innovations is essential for enhancing the efficiency and accuracy of data collection. He observed that dependable statistics form the foundation of informed decision-making and enable governments to formulate policies based on measurable evidence rather than assumptions.

Earlier, Assistant Director Sonam Tundup, in his welcome address, highlighted the central role of statistical data in evidence-based governance and development planning, stating that accurate information remains indispensable for framing responsive public policies and assessing developmental priorities.

Addressing the gathering, Joint Director Planning, Tsering Angdus, traced the evolution of India’s statistical system and underscored the importance of credible data in planning, monitoring and evaluating government programmes. He said robust statistical mechanisms are critical to ensuring effective implementation of welfare and development initiatives.

Joint Director Abdul Hadi also spoke on the contribution of statistical systems to developmental planning, emphasising that systematic data collection continues to guide public institutions in addressing emerging socio-economic challenges.

Officials and staff members of the Directorate participated in the programme and reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening Ladakh’s statistical framework to support transparent governance and informed public policy.

The programme concluded with a vote of thanks by Assistant Director Konchok Sherap, who expressed appreciation to the dignitaries, officers, officials and participants for contributing to the successful observance of National Statistics Day.
