LEH: District Police Leh on Tuesday commenced the second batch of its week-long Weapon Handling Training Programme for Special Police Officers (SPOs) at the District Police Lines (DPL), Leh, extending its ongoing capacity-building initiative aimed at strengthening the operational readiness, professional competence and discipline of police personnel.

The second phase of the programme follows the completion of the first batch and forms part of Ladakh Police’s sustained effort to build a professionally trained and operationally efficient cadre of SPOs capable of responding effectively to policing requirements.

Conducted under the Capacity Building Programme, the training combines classroom sessions with practical exercises to improve participants’ proficiency in weapon handling, maintenance, tactical response, operational drills and professional policing practices. The programme is designed to reinforce both technical competence and adherence to established policing standards.

Experienced instructors from the RAF Battalion are leading the training, with the curriculum focusing on weapon safety, correct handling procedures, firing positions, inspection and maintenance of firearms, tactical movement, situational awareness and compliance with operational protocols. The practical modules are intended to familiarise trainees with standard procedures while promoting disciplined handling of service weapons under varying operational conditions.

Officials said the initiative reflects the department’s continued emphasis on structured training as an integral component of police preparedness. By exposing SPOs to systematic instruction and field-oriented exercises, the programme seeks to enhance their confidence, operational efficiency and ability to perform assigned duties with professionalism.

District Police Leh reiterated its commitment to conducting regular capacity-building programmes to upgrade the skills of its personnel, with a focus on improving operational effectiveness, discipline and preparedness across the force.
